We have all heard the term “niche” and “niches” thrown around a lot. If you want to run a business, you have to find a niche. That’s all well and good, but most people need to know a little more about how to find a niche and how to research profitable niches. Niches are only going to be good if you can make some money at them.
As a Christian, you most likely are praying about starting a home based business and finding a niche that God wants you to be in. And I believe that is the first and most important step. You will want to take an inventory of the gifts and talents He has given you. What do you do well? What do you know more about than the average person? What interests you? These are all questions you can ask yourself to get some insight into what would be possible niches for you.
After you have prayed and looked at your skills and talents, you will also want to take some practical steps to research niches before getting into them. But how do you research niches to see if they will be profitable?
There are many things you can do, but in this article, I want to zero in on one strategy. You can do some keyword research online. Keywords are the words or phrase someone would type into a search engine to find websites on a certain topic. Let’s say someone is looking for information on how to train a dog. They will probably go to Google (or another search engine) and type in “how to train a dog” or “dog training.” These would be considered the keywords.
So, what you want to do is find out what words or phrases people use to find what you want to offer. Think of the terms you would use if you were looking for the type of product you are thinking of offering. Then, you can use a keyword research tool to check on how many people actually search for that particular phrase.
There are two tools you can use to do some keyword research and they are both free. There are more, but these are the two I have experience with – Wordtracker and Google Keyword tool. Just Google them and you will find them. Put in the keyword phrase that you would use and you will get that phrase plus many others that are related – it will show you different phrases that people use to find this type of product. That will show you the amount of interest in this particular product and niche.
There are many other ways to research profitable niches, and this is a step you will not want to leave out. Otherwise, you may end up putting in a lot of time and money, only later to realize there is not a lot of interest in the niche.
Starting a Christian home based business can be exciting and fun! But you also want it to be profitable. Take some time now to start your business on solid ground.
